Greetings everyone! I recently found that one of my favorite authors, Sarah C.M. Paine, gave a series of historical lectures on youtube with Dwarkesh Patel. Prof. Paine has writtens everal excellent books on the history of war in Asia, particularly with regard to Japan, China, and Russia. She currently serves at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island.
I've used her work, and the primary sources she cites, in my own work, both in higher level education and my publications on this website and elsewhere. In particular, her book "The Wars for Asia, 1911-1949" is quite good. All of her works are on the Pacific History Guide reading list.
I've linked the videos here and encourage you to watch them; they're all fantastic; honest, straightforward, and thought-provoking. The first is the war for India; the second is titled why Japan lost, and the final talk is how Mao conquered China. I've listed her I've listed her books below the videos, I strongly recommend checking them all out!
The Japanese Empire: Grand Strategy from the Meiji Restoration to the Pacific War (Cambridge University Press, 2017).
The Wars for Asia 1911–1949 (Cambridge University Press, 2012). 2012 Winner of the PROSE award for European & World History[8] and longlisted for the Lionel Gelber prize.[9]
