Queensland is situated in the northeast of Australia, the second largest and third most populous state in the country. It is bordered by New South Wales to the south, South Australia to the southwest, and Northern Territory to the west. The State has several distinct climates and the northeast coast forms part of the Great Barrier Reef, with the northern tip of the York Peninsula lying just across the Torres Strait from Papua New Guinea.

The four largest cities in the state are Brisbane (the capital and its environs), Townsville, Cairns, and Mackay. Brisbane is a popular port call for U.S. Navy ships, and RAAF/RAN bases near Townsville and Rockhampton are common detachment and deployment sites.
