Guam is an organized unincorporated territory of the United States consisting of a single island, the largest in the Marianas Island chain. Guam is the westernmost U.S. territory in the Pacific.

The Marianas Islands were settled from remote Oceania. They were later colonized by the Spanish. Following the Spanish-American War, Guam was sundered from the other islands in the group and ceded to the United States along with the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.

Guam was captured by the Japanese in the opening days of the Second World War, and occupied until the Battle of Guam in 1944. The island saw heavy fighting during the war and there are several battlefields, memorials and monuments around the Island. The United States later militarized Guam, building several important Naval and Air Force facilities.
