The Republic of Singapore is an island nation in Southeast Asia that has played an essential part in the political, social, and economic history of the region stretching back thousands of years.

Singapore is separated from the Malay Peninsula by the Johor Strait and from Indonesia by the Malacca and Singapore Straits. These bodies of water allow for the quickest seaborne route from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific and are home to a large portion of international trade.

The history of Singapore is a long and detailed one. The country gained its independence from Great Britain in 1947 (becoming a crown colony) and from Malaysia in 1965 (becoming a sovereign state). The Republic of Singapore is at once vibrant and stuffy, advanced and traditional, and effortlessly hosts historical sites from ancient times alongside modern art of the 21st century.
