San Diego is the second-most populous city in California and the eighth-most populous in the United States. Situated at the extreme southern end of the state abreast the Pacific Ocean, San Diego has a temperate climate and many excellent port facilities that have attracted both civilian and military maritime organizations.

The city has a long association with the U.S. Navy going back to 1874. Within the limits of San Diego county are approximately 110,000 service personnel and 118,000 family members, spread across ten bases, including Naval Station San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island, and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
