San Francisco is the fourth-most populated city in California, and 17th nationwide. Situated at the end of a long peninsula which protects two large bays, and faces the Pacific Ocean to the west. San Francisco includes many islands including Angel Island, Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and Yerba Bueno.

San Francisco's history includes several events that have become a part of the American consciousness, including the 1849 gold rush and 1906 earthquake. During the Second World War, the city was a hub for deployments and homecomings for U.S. service members. San Francisco has a proud maritime tradition, and is home to many museums, monuments, and historical sites.
