Victoria is situated in the southeast of Australia, the second smallest, second most populous, and most densely populated state in the country. It is bordered by New South Wales to the north and South Australia to the west. Tasmania lies across the Bass Strait to the south.

Melbourne is Victoria's largest city and Australia's second-largest; the greater Melbourne Area is home to 5.2 million people surrounding Port Phillip, a large body of water open to the Southern Ocean
